About this deal

There are some solid anecdotes to be found across the suite of featurettes, but ultimately, it's all a little lightweight, everything is a watch-once-and-forget-about-it affair and really it’s a little disappointing. But with its long run time and constant flashy sequences, the film can inch away from the story at hand.

A stunning Butler performance at its core, the film’s energy and its heart deliver a thoroughly entertaining look into the soul of a modern-day legend. Speaking of which, having that being aforementioned, this is also a perfect movie to get all three forms of high dynamic range where it can demonstrate all the very many capabilities that each format has. This comes with rich vibrant colors that “pop” all throughout the film, many thanks to its opening beautiful logo, the fantastic costume design, larger-than-life set pieces, a perfectly solid black level, accurate flesh tones, and all of which look downright stunning in 4K with HDR. Sadly, in keeping with other entries in the Paramount Presents line, bonus features aren’t exactly a show-stopping collection. The front stage shoulders most of the burden of the track, but not to sell the rest of the track short – the surrounds do more than their fare share.offers solid support, from its outstanding A/V presentation to a short but serviceable collection of extras. Like so many of the movies starring Elvis Presley, Blue Hawaii won’t be mistaken as one of the greatest cinematic achievements of any generation.

In fact, the only “flaw” I see here is that when the film relies on rear projection, it just makes the effect painfully obvious. But kudos to Luhrmann for doing something creative and original with this biopic that nobody saw coming - telling the hero's story from the villain's eye line. The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley's rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. The disc therefore utilises the film’s 4K digital intermediate to produce a native 4K, 3840 x 2160p resolution, image with an aspect ratio of 2.Nicely digging into his musical heritage, it just captures the musical aspects perfectly and Luhrmann rightly never lets us forget it. It's breathless, especially in its opening act, where time periods slip and slide across each other as Parker’s narration gets the audience up to speed with Presley, and it could so easily disorientate… but it somehow seems a perfect match for the sequin-festooned, gaudily glamorous excess of Elvis’s life that, together with its established structure of taking part in Parker’s drug-induced mind, presents Presley in almost the only way that it could. Also, unlike any previous biographies about Elvis, this one ended up being approved (after release) by Priscilla Presley and Lisa Marie Presley as discussed in this Entertainment Weekly article.
