About this deal

I chose to internalise the tabloid narrative that I was going to be a miracle, so when I came back to England and I was recovering and the miracle didn’t happen I had to go through a grieving process even though it was nobody’s fault – because I hadn’t been misled. Compulsive reading, unique, this beautifully crafted work is suffused with depth, affection, and remarkable observations. Featuring a vibrant rainbow design, and our super-sized Q logo, you won't find a more stylish way to make a statement.

Such a beautifully written and powerful book which could have been shockingly depressing but you are gently guided through this young man's traumatic life sensitively. For him, as so often for people discovering their sexuality (me included), the first words you hear connected to it are insults from peers. From partners, friends, families and everything in-between, Matt and Harry want to explore what makes relationships in the queer community so special. Not only is Emmett’s writing so incredibly beautiful - even poetic - his story is poignant and uplifting, and I commend his bravery for sharing it with the world. The bestselling LGBTQ+ graphic novel about life, love, and everything that happens in between: this is the fifth volume of the Heartstopper series.

Most heartbreaking was the isolation that was painfully familiar — too queer for the disabled community, too disabled for the queer community, left belonging to neither. At mainstream school, teachers refuse to schedule his classes on the ground floor, and he loses a stone from the effort of getting up the stairs. And then Emmett is chosen for a first-of-its-kind surgery in America which he hopes will 'cure' him, enable him to walk unaided. For fifty years, she has trained to slay wyrms - but none have appeared since the Nameless One, and the younger generation. Emmett did not belong anywhere, excluded by other disabled because he was gay, and by other gay people because he was disabled. The epilogue, which at first suggests a happy ending, confounds expectations when De Monterey is subjected to ableist abuse in a supermarket queue, making him realise that while his life may have moved on in many ways, some things haven’t. When the 'miracle' doesn't occur, Emmett must reckon with a world which views disabled people as invisible, unworthy of desire. I was earmarked immediately as something that was dangerously different in that environment and that was really difficult.

Emmett who has cerebral palsy and is gay explores his identity and also the identity that society puts on him due to how he is perceived. I left this book feeling GREATFUL, heartbroken but this book is written beautiful and very poetic, big Shout out to the author for sharing this beautiful book with us. Conversations about weight, size and shape have never been more loaded or volatile, which is why I am so pleased to have had Laura Adlington on the podcast. The Hogarth Press where I’m working, is in the heart of the literary world, with authors coming in all the time.

In this heart warming discussion we delve deep into Emmett’s story, into the prejudice he encountered, his route to acceptance and the impact his parents played in helping him to embrace his own identity. Lauren, Rina and Gemma discuss how their own views on disability have changed and Emmett shares why owning and writing his story was so important. The goal of the F**king Normal podcast is to extend the conversation and build a supportive community for other parents. The medical model of disability posits that the disabled individual needs to be fixed or somehow normalised by surgical intervention, and I had completely swallowed this idea,” Emmett explains. This book is warmth and emotional, is such a intimate memoir that is so intense and so beautiful that could be one of my favourite memoirs this years. Good-humoured, unpretentious and a bit eccentric, it's more like having a well-read friend than a subscription to a literary review.
