About this deal

What started as me doodling in a sketchbook will become a whole series of animated adventures and I cannot wait to share them with everyone. I'd stick with recommending it to readers who've encountered enough fantasy to really appreciate it. With more than 40 productions to its name, recent successes include the internationally popular 2D animated adventure/comedy Topo Gigio, Le Loup with Rai Kids and the first Italian YA animated series, Zerocalcare’s Tear Along the Dotted Line for Netflix. The Super Happy Magic Forest is the happiest forest there is, but when evil slugs and Ice Queens get involved, five brave heroes must set out on an epic quest to defend their home and bring frolicking back to the forest! Additionally a lot of the story is told through speech bubbles which is a nice way to introduce children to the concept and provides brilliant opportunity for voices in storytelling.

However in terms of individual readers the book would be more appropriate for an advanced Year One pupil or a Year Two pupil as the vocabulary used is sometimes quite advanced and the book holds a lot of text with often polysyllabic words which are not decodable. Matty Long, author and illustrator of the book series says: “I am beyond excited that the five heroes of the Super Happy Magic Forest books are making the journey from page to screen. The 52×11 minutes series will bring to life the world created in the books, in a colourful 2D animation for 7+ years. A Super Happy Magic Forest chapter book packed with illustrations and plenty of humour-this is the perfect read for fans of Dog Man and Captain Underpants (6+). They must first navigate past dragon lairs, outwit cunning ogres, swim across deep rivers and work as a team if they are to succeed.Graphic novel style layout, lots of references to pop culture (nerdy references/jokes) that adults would get (hopefully). He loves all the little drawings and insists that we read all the words with the pictures every time. First published by Oxford University Press in 2015, Super Happy Magic Forest is a comedy quest adventure series featuring five heroes, brought together by their mutual love of questing, picnics and frolicking.

The illustrations are colourful and hold incredibly rich details which enhance the storytelling process. You only realise quite how boring most books for the very young are when you come across one that breaks the mould - or, I should say, the ice. The magic crystals have been stolen, and a team of heroes must be assembled to rescue them from the goblin kingdom. It tells a story of mystical creatures that are chosen to be heroes, but get sent on a wild goose chase. That is until the super slimy SLUG OF DOOM threatens to drink a magical potion that will give him the size and strength to eat the entire forest.

I spent most of the time looking at the pictures and the small thought bubbles or things said by the forest creatures. Mid-grade readers who read a lot of fantasy will get a lot of the surface jokes, but will also get a lot of the in-jokes. For example, as the intrepid heroes walk past a rock, you can see Gollum sitting on it holding a ring.
