About this deal

This design isn’t as straight forward as the usual “pyramid” like tent, but it would look perfect when building a marketplace or desert build. The ‘front’ of the tent we will partially close off, with Spruce Fences on the floor near the wall, with a single Spruce Fence beam in the middle to make it look like it is holding the tent up. Some of our testers pulled the short straw and ended up with some really awkward tents to put up, others got the easy ones! You'll want to ensure your tent footprint is the same size as the tent you're pitching – several manufacturers sell footprints specifically to fit certain tent models.

The solid structure of the tent provides good protection from the wind and keeps the tent stable if there’s some wind. We also love the rainfly design, which does a good job in never touching the sides of the tent so the interior stays totally dry. Setup requires stakes at all four corners and attachment points at the end of the single pole that our testers described as "baffling to figure out." Two extra poles at the ceiling did give the tent a bit more structure. "The instructions, which we needed, are a yellow printer paper sheet with a link to a Vimeo video, which is a terrible idea," our testers said. "Somehow, the rainfly was even more confusing to attach." The REI Wonderland 4 is a highly rated tent which has a few new developments to make it even easier to use. The color coding on the tent, poles, and fly keep everything simple for setting the tent up so even the kids can help.

Types of Tent Materials

Sea to Summit calls it a three-season tent, and we'd have to agree as the tent has a ton of ventilation but can also stay warm with the rainfly, especially on sunnier days, thanks to its dark color. The Telos series was launched in March 2021 and was Sea to Summit's first tent line. The goal? Boosting space while minimizing weight. To do this, Sea to Summit created a proprietary pole system that angles up instead of the typical down-curved poles. Our testers appreciated the high and roomy ceiling and the amount of freestanding space that comes without staking. You probably recognize the ridge tent or the “A-frame” tent, and at one point in time, virtually all tents held this shape. The name comes from the cross pole, called a ridge, that stretches across the length of the tent, holding up the roof. The design is simple and effective, and a well-pitched ridge tent is likely to hold up better than most modern tent styles. The HydroTex polycotton (65% polyester, 35% cotton) outer is warm in the cold, yet breathable and ventilating in the heat, while still being impressively water-resistant, with a 10,000mm fitted groundsheet that is practically impervious. We love the rectangular pole configuration that creates a generous living area and terrific picture window for you to enjoy the vistas. At only 170cm, there’s not much space to stand, but we didn’t mind this as it adds to the frontier-style adventure feel. We think this is a great tent for young families who want style, features, and comfort, as well as to stand out from the festival crowd. Tent technology has come a long way, so there are lots of excellent quality lightweight tents which are also durable and strong. One thing to keep in mind when calculating weight is whether you’ll be including the tent footprint or a tarp. Having a footprint makes a big difference in terms of how effective a tent is against the wind, but it also adds a bit more weight.

Cabin tents are typically a single space tent, though some of them may have internal dividers that separate the space into rooms. They don’t require the footprint that pod-style tents do, but they are square, stable, and tall enough to the point that you can easily stand up in them. They are definitely not ideal for harsh weather conditions, but they make great tents for casual camping and hanging out. The fabric is hard-wearing and waterproof. We appreciated the webbing guide straps, which make it extremely stable even in high winds, as well as the high levels of adjustable ventilation. It is also bug-proof, and the rain cover over one of the two side doors will help keep the worst of the British weather off the groundsheet. In this article, we’ve chosen our favourite tents for practically every camping situation, from the best budget tent to buy for a weekend trip to a luxurious, spacious family tent that you’ll use again and again. Whatever adventure you’re planning, we’ve reviewed a tent to suit you. Many travelers will substitute a footprint with a decent tarp. The benefits to using a tarp are that it is more budget-friendly and that it’s easier to replace. The downsides are that the tarp won’t match the exact size of the tent and usually tarps are heavier. Nowadays, however, you might call this a “retro” tent, and there are also some downsides including less storage space and headroom, less availability, and sometimes complicated setup. In general, ridge tents are excellent options for solo travelers or even couples who don’t plan on spending much time inside.

Dome Tents: Dome tents are popular for their stability and versatility. These tents offer ample headroom and are ideal for various outdoor activities, from camping in the woods to attending festivals. If you'd like a genuinely freestanding budget tent, we suggest the Stoic Driftwood 2 (more on that below). You can either wait for rain or take a garden hose to your tent and achieve the same results, which is a waterproof tent ready for camping.
