About this deal

Massively juniorised (and again, I know sometimes people criticise this criticism because ultimately it is still a toy aimed at children, but larger sets can still appeal to children without becoming as dumbed down as this set). All LEGO® Marvel Spider-Man playsets are cool and collectible and give kids the chance to relive favorite superhero movie moments and create imaginative stories of their own. Giving Spider-Man a lair feels like a pretty solid premise. Peter Parker technically had a defunct one in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and the LEGO Group has shown it’s not averse to taking its cues from the highly-acclaimed animated movie. Plus, it makes for a nice change from the armada of pointless vehicles the web-slinger has been saddled with over the past few years. Unfortunately, it almost completely fails in its execution.

OK, we get it, Venom is a Spider-Man villain...there are a PLETHORA of others though, LEGO, yeah...I’m talking to you, don’t you think we’ve had enough Venom figures by now? Maybe throw us Marvel Superfans something else? With so many alternate universe versions of Spider-Man (Spider-verse), it seems like this was a natural evolution for LEGO to take to try and ramp up the collectability of the entire theme and make increase the likelihood of people turning around and buying some of the older sets too. This set was provided for review by The LEGO Group but the review represents an expression of my own opinions.Moving on to the middle of the lair, Spider-Man has his supercomputer where he can sit down and surf….the WEB. LEGO components satisfy stringent industry standards to ensure they are consistent, compatible and connect and pull apart correctly every time – it's been that way since 1958.

My overall thoughts of the set are surprisingly neutral. This is nowhere near a bad set, but not ahead of others either, it’s just, neutral. It does its job and that’s not something to look down on, the system works. That being said, I would have no hesitation in recommending this for a birthday or Christmas gift for kids and Spider-Man fans alike. Minifigure printing is poor, low quality, juniorised. Green Goblin whilst a fairly good minifigure falls far short of the version from the Bridge set; that one had pin point-sharp printing, a bolder and more accurate colour scheme, better glider and better expression. LEGO components are dropped, heated, crushed, twisted and analyzed to make sure they fulfill rigorous global safety standards. The accompanying video game screen displays Spider-Man swinging through New York City. Certain aspects of the design resemble the recent PlayStation 4 game, although not perfectly. Five varying Spider-Man suits appear beside the video game, including one which is enlarged and reminds me of the original Spider-Man minifigure from 2002. However, the most intriguing example is the Bombastic Bagman costume! As the Goblin-glider is foot-and-balance controlled in the comics, I have no complaints about there not being any obvious control surfaces for the Green Goblin minifigure to operate. I’m also happy to see a “classic” version of these designs, rather than going with any of the live-action versions. I think this critique could be handed out for almost any Superhero set, considering the city is their environment, and barring the few sets that are inexpensive, Its hard to make a playground like that, especially for Spidey in NY. ]] Apparently there are a few other Batman rogues with fairly regular appearances. I see ten minifig-based sets for Riddler, nine for Mr. Freeze, and eight for Catwoman. Even Poison Ivy ties Venom with seven. The motorcycle bay feels very similar in design to the 76125 Iron Man Hall Of Armor layout, one of the other Marvel “lair” sets. It’s not a particularly efficient design, as there’s very limited room for a minifigure to stand next to the bike and work on it. I guess Spidey can cling to surfaces, so maybe the slope around the bike doesn’t even phase him.

There are six minifigures in the box, which sounds pretty good for a Marvel set. And, to its credit, three of them are brand new and exclusive: the ‘Big Time’ variant of the Stealth Spider-Suit from Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 (the set description refers to a ‘PlayStation’ among Pete’s many monitors, but there’s no physical game console), a fresh take on Green Goblin, and – more interestingly – what appears to be Ben Reilly, a Peter Parker clone known in-universe as Scarlet Spider.Next up is the other exclusive Spider-Man costume in this set. Labeled on the box as Ultimate Spider-Man, this outfit is more commonly known as the “Big Time Suit”, a stealth costume that first appeared in 2010’s Amazing Spider-Man #650. It’s had several video game appearances since then, starting with 2011’s Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. No accessories to be had here, as that wouldn’t be very stealthy, now would it? It might have made things a bit more “ultimate”, though. Spider-Man’s lair shares plenty of DNA with 2019’s 76122 Batcave Clayface Invasion, from its central multi-screened computer terminal to its side sections, prison cell and vehicles. But everything’s much smaller here, and far more junior by comparison: it’s built across a single level, the bulk of the size is created by a handful of huge parts, and the whole thing just comes across as half-hearted. Yeah...I should have said not only am I a superfan...I’m an aging superfan. I’d even be into a Madame Web!
