After Fleetwood Mac unceremoniously ejected Lindsey Buckingham from the group in 2018, the chances that we’d ever again hear new music from the group’s classic lineup seemed remote. With Christine recently passing it’s been nice to listen to this set and appreciate all she gave to the music of Fleetwood Mac. In this behind-the-scenes look at the making of Fleetwood Mac’s epic, platinum-selling double album, Tusk, producers and engineers Ken Caillat and Hernan Rojas tell their stories of spending a year with the band in their new million-dollar studio trying to follow up Rumours, the biggest rock album of the time. Granted, some of the outtakes, such as Tango in the Night’s “Seven Wonders,” differ only subtly from the original recordings, but others feature different lyrics or vastly altered musical approaches.

Nice collection, CD version mirrors the same aesthetics of the vinyl set, all CD faces have the same style of artwork as the corresponding LP center labels. Such an edition of the group’s eponymous 1975 LP came out in 2012 and was followed in later years by box sets devoted to 1977’s Rumours, 1979’s Tusk, 1980’s Live, 1982’s Mirage, and 1987’s Tango in the Night. Following their massive success, the band continued its infamous soap opera when its musical leader and guitarist, Lindsey Buckingham, threatened to quit if he didn’t get things his way, resulting in clashes not only with his band but especially Caillat, who had been essential to the band’s Grammy-winning sound. Throughout the book, both Caillat and Rojas detail not only the trials and sacrifices they made to finish the album, but also triumphs of musical inspiration and technical innovation that have made Tusk the darling of music critics and indie rockers today. For those who have listened to the original albums many times, it is a refreshing listening experience to hear these alternative versions.

By stripping away production gloss, some of them—including, for example, many of the Rumours tracks— shine a light on a composition’s underlying strength. All too often it seems that remastering is the process of brightening up one or two instruments, leaving everything else a bit muddled in the middle. Some of his listeners probably wouldn’t have understood him if he had because they didn’t speak English.

Mirage is without doubt a superb album, capturing and showing off everything that is great about Fleetwood Mac in their earlier years. I don’t really care to hear a 6 second conversation saying I can’t hear you can we redo this…or some other thing that doesn’t add to the album. The set will include: The Alternate Fleetwood Mac, The Alternate Rumours, The Alternate Tusk (2LP), The Alternate Live, The Alternate Mirage, The Alternate Tango In The Night. The contents have been previously issued on vinyl for annual Record Day events and have also appeared on deluxe editions of the original albums. A limited-edition, clamshell-boxed anthology, it contains six CDs (or eight vinyl LPs) and includes versions of six of the group’s biggest albums that preserve their original cover art but offer different recordings of each of their tracks.The sound quality on these recordings is top notch, its so crystal clear and life like that you will have to be careful as not to deafen yourself because you will be constantly turning the volume up.
