About this deal

Always try to shorten the growths to about the same length and this will maintain the perfect column. All of them columnar trees, which means that they grow straight upwards and don't really spread out much sideways. This popular garden apple is very similar to Cox but is much easier to grow and particularly suitable for areas where Cox cannot be grown successfully. That's why I decided to finish the planting today, even if it was so warm and wet in my rain clothes.

I actually feel inspired to plant even more columnar apple trees (and other varieties too of course) in my little cottage garden. Growth will be slow, so plant them in the best possible soil and in full light, ideally somewhere sheltered. There will be room for a tiny 'avenue' of 16 supercolumn trees — eight per side, in enriched soil in narrow parallel beds, with a path between them. You can grow several trees pruned in this way in the space that would ordinarily only be able to accommodate one fruit tree – and therefore get a lot more from the available area. Rootgrow (150g Granules) For better establishment, naturally healthier plants, better drought resistance and stronger flowering and fruiting, rootgrow™ is all you need.According to St Ives Community Orchard, some of the best companion plants for fruit trees include Nasturtium, Basil, Yarrow, Comfrey and Chamomile. In this way, you can avoid ingenuous providers who sell normal-growing fruit plants as columnar fruit trees. Pear, Condo - regular-sized pears that ripen from September (but probably later here in zone 3, I would assume. I thought I’d update you on almost a years worth of growth of our fruit trees bought and planted last January.

With the right amount of sunlight and care, your columnar apple tree can start producing fruit in as little as three years. For these, dig out a trench along a guide line and plant apple trees in it, for example, at a distance of 50 cm to 60 cm. The key difference when summer pruning is to leave several shorter new shoots, about a secateur’s length (20cm/8in) or less, unpruned every year. So you should only shorten the central shoot after five to seven years, directly above the flat growing side shoots. It is an excellent alternative to Cox as it is much easier to grow and is particularly recommended for the north where it is a popular garden variety. This marks the angle and spacing of the trees, and is the support to which the main trunk of your cordon fruit tree will be tied. Cordon Apple 'Bardsey' This is a very special dual-purpose dessert/culinary apple, believed to be the only survivor of an orchard tended by monks on remote Bardsey Island (off the Welsh coast) 1000 years ago. Since the branches are short, the trees are well-suited to small gardens in urban or suburban environments.
