At the start of 2017 Jacques Villemain published Vendée, 1793–1794: Crime de guerre? Crime contre l'humanité? Génocide? Une étude juridique [Vendée, 1793–1794: War crime? Crime against humanity? Genocide? A juridical study], which an analysis by him of the Vendée war from the perspective of the international courts of justice in The Hague (such as the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda). Jacques Villemain is a French diplomat, and is currently the vice representative of France at OECD and is representing France at the International Court of Justice. He presented a legal study on the War of Vendée based on current international criminal law, according to modern findings in the international courts on genocide cases like the Rwanda Genocide and the Srebrenica massacre, is that the government of the First French Republic was guilty of war crimes beginning in March 1793, crimes against humanity between April to July 1793, and genocide from 1 August 1793 to the middle of 1794. [77] Challenging the methodology [ edit ] During the Hundred Years War, the Vendée was not spared by conflicts and although the nobles were the first targets, there was an oppressive atmosphere, coupled with the specter of the Plague which was wreaking havoc. It was only with the arrival of Joan of Arc and Gilles de Rais (Château de Tiffauges) who was Joan of Arc's companion in arms, that the impetus for the reconquest was given. A period of prosperity follows, with the advent of the Salt Marshes in the 16th century, salt being a precious commodity at the time, because it allows food to be preserved. Fontenay le Comte, which was favored by King Louis XI, prospered and during the Renaissance, pomp and elegance signify an urban development that we can still admire today. The name Vendée is taken from the river Vendée which runs through the southeastern part of the department. The river is attested as Fluvium Vendre in the 10th century, and as Flumen Vendee and Vendeia by the 11th century. According to Pierre-Henri Billy, the name ultimately derives from the Celtic toponym *vindo- meaning white or brilliant in a sacred context (as in the Modern Welsh gwyn/wyn). The name likely originates in Proto-Celtic or Gaulish, but may also have originated in the Gallo or Old Breton languages. [7] Geography [ edit ] Map of the department
